Who We Are
Monty Harper
Howdy! I am Monty Harper, the designer and administrator of this
radio list and owner of kidsmusicplanet.com. I am also a children's
musician and I make my living performing in schools and libraries
and writing and recording songs for and with kids. I live in Stillwater,
OK. I'm maintaining this list as a volunteer during one day a
month which I set aside for this purpose. To learn more about
me, visit my website at www.montyharper.com.
Paul Harper
Paul is my dad. He is a retired college professor and former head
of the Speech Department at Oklahoma State University. He is volunteering
his time to do the "legwork" involved in keeping this list fresh
every month. This includes calling programs to see if they are
still on the air and adding new programs and updates we receive
through this site. My dad has agreed to do this with the understanding
that any and all proceeds will go to his granddaughter's (my daughter's)
college fund.
Evalyn Rose Harper
Evalyn is my daughter. She is three years old for the moment.
Her function is to interrupt as often as possible while I'm working
on the computer and demand that I read her a story. Any proceeds
gained from this site will go to her college fund.
PJ Swift
PJ is a special ed teacher and mother of two. She lives in Santa
Cruz, California. In her spare time (ha!) PJ is a champion of
children's radio. For many years she produced the popular syndicated
radio program, Pickleberry Pie. Through her Pickleberry Pie nonprofit organization she now sends
children's performers into hospitals all over the country and
runs the Children's Music Web Awards. Her function here is to
serve as an advisor and to provide some financial support when
needed to keep the radio list online. Find out more about PJs
good work at www.childrensmusic.org.
A Brief History of the Radio List
The purpose of the radio list is to give children's recording artists and children's radio producers a way to connect. The list has been compiled by volunteers, including Jamie Deming, Paul Butler, Jeff Brown, PJ Swift, and Rachel Sumner, and passed from hand to hand for almost two decades. In the past it has been distributed in print form to members of both the Children's Music Network and the Children's Entertainment Association.
However, due to the rapidly changing landscape of children's radio, the printed form of this list quickly goes out of date, making it no more than a "starting point" for artists wishing to have their music heard. The list has also frustrated radio programmers who continue to receive submissions long after their programs have changed format or been canceled!
In recent years we made the database available on-line through childrensmusic.org and kidsmusicplanet.com. Unfortunately, the project was one of many for both PJ and myself, and updates were too few and far between. Resources were not (and still are not) available to create a log-in site that would allow radio producers to make their own updates.
So we took the database off-line in the Spring of 2002 and contemplated alternate approaches.
Our Plans
This new effort was launched in the Spring and Summer of 2003. This time, with my dad's volunteer help, we hope to keep the list always up to date. The list will remain free to the public and new updates will be posted here each month. At the top of the list you will see the date that the next scheduled update will appear (barring any unforeseen technical explosions).
How You Can Help
If you are a recording artist making good use of the list, please make a contribution to my daughter's college fund. This is how my dad gets "paid" for his time. Think how much effort we've saved you through this list!
You can also help by sending us corrections that you may know of so that this list remains as accurate as possible.
If you are a radio producer, please update the list with accurate information.
If your program ends, please let us know!
If you know of any other radio programs that are not on the list, please let us know. We are especially interested in getting accurate information about programs outside the U.S.
To let us know about any additions, deletions, or other changes to the list, please use our handy dandy online form.
Thanks!
